(Im)mobility of Polish scientists

May 10, 2010

Short summary of the earlier post in Polish. Ministry of Science and Higher Education published a report about mobility of Polish doctorate holders, which I coauthored. The report is in Polish but contains a lot of charts so perhaps you might still want to have a look. The main results regarding mobility are:

  1. Polish scientists hardly ever change jobs.
  2. Majority of employees of Polish scientific institutions graduated from the very same institution they work in. On average this holds for 50% of the respondents. However, if we focus on largest universities in Poland the fraction jumps up to 85-95%! See figure 30 on page 40 for some international comparisons.
  3. We capture some positive effects of mobility on scientific productivity. People who changed their jobs after receiving the degree on average publish more books, and, moreover, submit twice as much patent applications than people who stay in the same institution.
